Diving
Grand Cayman and Bermuda, 2024
My sons got certified to dive recently, and I took an old GoPro down with me to experiment with. I knew enough to understand that if I wanted to accurately capture the incredible colors of the creatures who live down there, I would need a lot of expensive gear, but I’ve been trying to keep things simple. What I found is that the light is no less incredible under the water than it is on land, and that a lot of the instincts I have developed as a photographer for what will make an interesting photo work equally well down below. Anyone who has had a chance to dive knows how otherworldly and often dreamlike it feels to be in that alien environment. And once I got to the editing stage, I felt again that incredible sense of amazement and possibility I remembered from my first days of learning what Lightroom was capable of. Who knows what colors I actually saw down there, and who cares? It was so much fun to throw out any idea of how I “should” color correct, and just experiment, feel, and appreciate.
